Pedagogical Innovation for the 21st Century: Promoting Creativity and Critical Thinking in Ecuadorian Educational Contexts

This study analyzed the impact of pedagogical innovation on enhancing creativity and critical thinking in educational settings, using a mixed-methods approach that integrated both qualitative and quantitative methods. The research was grounded in the recognition that 21st-century education must respond to the challenges of a changing, complex, and highly technologized world, where higher-order cognitive skills are essential for students’ personal and professional development. A pedagogical intervention was implemented based on active methodologies such as project-based learning, guided debates, the use of digital technologies, and the resolution of real-world problems. The results showed a significant improvement in creative and critical thinking skills after the intervention, evidenced by both the assessment instruments and participants' perceptions. Qualitative data revealed increased motivation, autonomy, reflective thinking, and willingness to engage in collaborative learning. A shift in teaching practices was also observed, moving from a traditional approach to a more student-centered and facilitative role. These findings align with both national and international studies that emphasize the importance of creating stimulating and inclusive learning environments capable of fostering divergent and critical thinking. The study highlights the need to strengthen educational policies that support ongoing teacher training and the integration of technology in the classroom, particularly within the Ecuadorian context, in order to build a more relevant, transformative, and equitable education system.
