Application of artificial intelligence and gamification to strengthen learning in basic students in rural contexts

This study analyzes the impact of integrating artificial intelligence (AI) and gamification strategies to strengthen learning among basic education students in rural contexts. The research was conducted in Procer Nicasio Gonzalez, Juan Benigno Vela, and Franklin Roosevelt schools, located in the cantons of Echeandía and Guaranda, Bolívar province, Ecuador. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining a quasi-experimental design with pretest and posttest evaluations and a qualitative analysis based on semi-structured interviews and field diaries. The experimental group used an educational platform with adaptive AI algorithms and gamified components over eight weeks, while the control group followed traditional methodologies. Quantitative results showed statistically significant improvements in reading comprehension, mathematical problem-solving, and intrinsic motivation in the experimental group. Qualitative findings revealed positive acceptance of the model, increased learning autonomy, and a greater sense of control over the educational process. Despite challenges related to technological infrastructure, the results suggest that the combination of AI and gamification is an effective, replicable, and adaptable strategy to enhance educational quality in resource-limited rural areas.
